One positive effect of the cool and showery weather that we have recently experienced, are the highly dynamic and photographically interesting skies. One Sunday afternoon, I therefore again decide to hike the “Panorama route” in the Flemish Ardennes, starting from the tavern on top of the Hotond hill. This route is one of my favorites and is 16 km with a total of 364 m of height difference. It is therefore good physical exercise.
A 11.5 km hike around the village of Maarke in the Flemish Ardennes. One of the sights along the way is the picturesque 16th century St-Vincent chapel.

Beautiful skies during a 10 km hike on Christmas Day around the village of Sint-Blasius-Boekel in the Flemish Ardennes. Temperature is around 4°C and we are treated to a short but intense hail storm around mid way.

An easy but muddy afternoon hike on Armistice Day through the community of Horebeke in the Flemish Ardennes.
An impromptu 20 km Sunday afternoon hike through the Flemish Ardennes, between Brakel and Houppe. I enjoy autumn foliage in Brakelbos and Bois de la Louvière, as well as surprising panoramic views of both sides of the language border. Deer playfully roam the area and mushrooms are abundant.

Days are growing shorter and hence fall colors are starting to pop up in the pastoral landscape of the Flemish Ardennes. We make a pleasant afternoon hike nearby the village of Schorisse, crossing the “Burreken” nature reserve.

A 39 km family trip by bike via Eke, Vurste, Baaigem and Munte to a wooded area named “Makegemse Bossen”. In the woods we find a couple of beds of bluebells and some secluded ponds that are among the few in the province where 5 individual species of salamander have been spotted. The WWII bunkers on the 40 m high sandy ridge of Munte are a nice playground for the kids and offer a fine view of the surrounding area.
